police budget: proposed increase

One hundred years ago today … The New York Police Department proposed a budget for 1921 that would almost double that of 1920.

The Times reported that roughly $10K of the $17K increase lay in salaries, the rest in supplies and new stations. The police had recently invested in new weaponry, such as the sub-machine-gun celebrated earlier that month in the News, intended for use on “rioters” and “auto thieves.”

Over the subsequent week, Mayor John Hylan took it upon himself to fight the proposed increases.
