The Debut of Winnie Winkle, working woman

One hundred years ago today … Winnie Winkle (official title: Winnie Winkle the Breadwinner), created by Martin Branner, made its NYC debut, having appeared in the Chicago Tribune and its syndicated papers the previous day.

Winnie Winkle’s premise was that her titular character was to get a job and support her aging parents–timely for a society in which the role of women was changing as women (white women anyway) were beginning to vote and to join the workforce in increasing numbers. It ran until 1996.
