New York Velodrome Opens

One hundred years ago today … The New York Velodrome opened at 225th Street and Broadway. Georges Columbatto won a high profile bicycle race, and Babe Ruth made an appearance to fire the starter gun for a sprint in front of a crowd of 15,000 paying customers.

The Velodrome, under construction for the previous two years (we featured it here), was located across Spuyten Duyvil from Manhattan proper, in the Marble Hill area that is technically part of Manhattan, often considered part of the Bronx, depending on who is talking/writing
