One hundred years ago today … The first reviews of of James Joyce’s Ulysses appeared in the New York newspapers. The New York Tribune published Irish-born literary critic Ernest Boyd’s take.

The New York Times  published a review by psychologist Joseph Collins, printed alongside a drawing of Joyce by Gordon Stevenson

Ulysses  was contraband in the US (we posted about its consorship here, here, and here). It had taken three-and-a-half months since its publication in Paris for the NYC papers to get their hands on it and get it reviewed. In April, someone writing for the  Tribune under the pseudonym “Peregrine Pickle,” lamented the wait for their copy.
