Heroin and Cocaine Bust in Mott Haven

One hundred years ago today … a drug bust in the Bronx.

Cocaine had been made illegal in 1914, largely due to racial fears, as part of the Harrison Narcotics Tax Act. Heroin was expressly made illegal in 1924. The Anti-Heroin Act of 1924 expressly forbid the manufacture, sale, and use of heroin.


The bust started at a drop in the Mott Haven railyards ogf the New York Central line, a.k.a. the Mott Haven Wye. Here’s a 1908 map of the spot:
