Gasoline alley

One hundred years ago today … New Yorkers could read Frank King’s Gasoline Alley every day except Sunday in The Daily News. (They can read it there still; it is the longest-running comic strip still in production.) Here is the March 19 iteration.

The humor here lies in both the mechanic Walt’s head being covered in grease and the obvious joy of “Doc” at winning the argument, his interlocutor’s discomfort notwithstanding.

Gasoline Alley had debuted in Chicago, created by King as an occasional strip for the Tribune Corporation. The News had turned it into a daily in August of 1919. (See Stiles, “On The Road With Gasoline Alley.”)
