Halloween
One hundred years ago today, Etta Caulfield was brought into the West Side Court. Patrolman Martin Morrison had spotted her on 48th Street and Broadway dressed in men’s clothing. (There were anti-cross-dressing laws on the books.) But as it was Halloween, the magistrate at her arraignment allowed her to leave without being formally charged.
