The Gaelic American
One hundred years ago today … The Gaelic American was a weekly New York newspaper covering news pertaining to Ireland and Irish American interests.
The October 23 issue reported on the proceedings of the National Council of Sinn Fein and a British soldier shooting civilians in Dublin.
With the US elections imminent, the journal inveighed against Governor Al Smith and his support of the League of Nations, and endorsed the Republican Party.
The paper carried advertisements mean to appeal to its Irish American readership, such as for steamship tickets and Irish music, and discounts for Irish clubs.
