The Times Warns of Hitler


One hundred years ago today … the New York Times published an article warning of a fascist German political leader surging in popularity. Adolf Hitler, says the headline, has demonstrated “extraordinary powers of swaying crowds to his will.”

Correspondent Cyril Brown writes that Hitler is leading a “reactionary Nationalistic anti-Semitic movement” that “has now reached a point where it is considered potentially dangerous, though not for the immediate future.”

Brwon goes on to predict that “it is certain the Allies will take umbrage at the Hitler organization as a violation of the military clauses” of the Treaty of Versailles, “and demand disbandment.”
