AAPI Heritage Month
May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in the US. We’d like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the materials relevant to AAPI immigrant cultures of NY that we have posted on this site. Most of these posts showcase the racism and stereotyping of AAPI communities in the early 1920s, precursors to our contemporary moment and its rash of anti-Asian hate crimes.
February 19, 1920: Lunar New Year in Chinatown
June 12, 1920: The Departure of 'Doraldina'
June 23, 1920: 紐育新報: Nyū Yōku Shimpō, The Japanese Times
June 26, 1920: The Chinese Students’ Monthly
July 23, 1920: Picnics: African American, Chinese, Socialist, and Dangerous
October 28, 1920: Racism in song:"Ching-a Ling's jazz bazaar"
February 7, 1921: Lunar New Year and a “Riot” in Chinatown
March 23, 1921: Ta Chen Decries Distortions/Stereotypes of Chinatown and Chinese Culture
April 7, 1921: The Ritz Carlton: International Food, Orientalist Parties
There will be more to come as we continue to research early 1920s NYC, its hidden stories, its marginalized cultures, like those of Asian immigrants and AAPI communities.
