The Straw Hat Riots
One hundred years ago today … So-called riots erupted over straw hats, as young New Yorkers enjoyed enforcing the traditional end of straw hat wearing-season.
Groups of boys in different parts of the city attacked straw-hat wearers.
The story is a perfect one for The Bowery Boys NYC history podcast, who note that NYC’s Fashion Week coincides with the anniversary of the riots.
The incidents continued for several days.
