Edna Hicks, "I'm Goin' Away Just to Wear You off my Mind"
March is Women’s History Month. NY1920s always centers women’s history; this month we’ll do so a bit more emphatically.
One hundred years ago today … Blues singer Edna Hicks made her recording debut, performing "I'm Goin' Away Just to Wear You off my Mind" (which you can listen to here) and "Sugar Blues" (which has not survived).
Clarence Johnson accompanied Hicks on piano, at Victor Studios, 46 W 38th St. (which we posted pictures of here).
A native New Orleanian, Hicks was the half-sister of blues singer Lizzie Miles, whose debut we featured just over a year ago. Hicks would die in a tragic accident in 1925.
