The Negro World

The fifth 1923 post for our annual celebration of Black History Month.

One hundred years ago today… the February 17th issue of the weekly newspaper The Negro World appeared. Founded and edited by Marcus Garvey, the journal featured a headline ramping up the feud between Garvey and W.E. B. Du Bois.

In keeping with U.N.I.A.’s economic mission, the paper advertised shoppin for groceceries at Black-owned businesses.

It advertised for a forthcoming monthly, The Blackman, which Garvey would put out six years later.
