“Jewish derelects” arrive


One hundred years ago today … Jewish children, orphaned by military conflicts, arrived in New York City.

The “derelicts” as the News described them, were taken into custody by the joint Distribution Committee. According to Jewish New York: the Remarkable Story of a City and a People: “World War I prompted New York Jews to organize a massive effort of relief that led to the creation of the Joint Distribution Committee.” The photo below “depicts graphically what a ten-dollar contribution conceivably could buy” for “Russian war sufferers.” (Moore, 161)
